Picture of the day

Mont St Michel is one of the most recognisable images in France. Lying just in Normandy (much to the annoyance of those in Brittany) there has been an Abbey here for centuries. The narrow cobbled streets lead up to the 'merveille' ('marvel') of the abbey church atop the rock, with stupendous views over the Bay.

The approach to Mont St Michel has been the subject of extensive improvements recently with the works nearing completion for 2013. The causeway that was there resulted in the bay silting up and the unique island status of the Mont being lost. Now there is a raised access road and the public either take a small bus to the foot of the Mont, or a horse-drawn wagon. It is hoped that this will restore the natural surroundings to how they have been for centuries.

It's a sight worth seeing even if it does get busy. Words cannot describe the majesty of the place whether it's a first or fiftieth visit. We visit on a number of our tours including our Normandy Discovery and Brittany 500 French cycling tours.

Mniot St Michel is one of France's most visited and best loved sights. Green Jersey French cycling tours visit it on several of our itineraries
