Ypres and the Somme

We've just returned from the areas around the battlefields of the firsrt world war. Two things stick in the mind. It wasn't just the British who were involved but the whole of the Empire as it was then. There are huge monuments to tens of thousands of Canadian, Newfoundland, Australian, New Zealand, South African and Indian troops who lost their lives. Secondly, the scale of the cemeteries is humbling. They don't contain hundreds of graves each, but thousands. And it's never far to the next one.
