The Auvergne and Masssif Central
The volcanic landscape of the Auvergne is rugged and romantic. Situated in the middle of France this is a rural area with no major cities. Quiet roads are the norm and the cycling is exceptional. Although by no means flat, fantastic views open up around every corner and many of the hills – also known as Puys – have been the scene of battles in the Tour de France. The Puy de Dome was the site of an infamous tussle between Poulidour and Anquetil (which Poulidor won) and the Puy Mary is a high pint of any visit to the area.
Local cuisine is hearty and filling, cantal cheese playing a large part. Bleu d’Auvergne is the other famous cheese, and the beef from local Salers cattle is renowned throughout France. This is the sort of place that is off the beaten track but once people have visited they wonder why they never did so before. For a cycling holiday it ticks a lot of boxes.
