Alsace

The regions of Alsace borders the Rhine and has changed hands many times in recent centuries, leading to a character that owes much to both French and German influences. This is a picture postcard area much beloved of the French but perhaps less known amongst the English-speaking peoples – to their disadvantage, as there is much of interest. As well as the Rhine plain, the Vosges Mountains create a wonderful unspoilt cycling area, with hardly any traffic and miles and miles of quiet roads. The Ballons d’Alsace are a challenge for any cyclist but the welcoming hotels in the area offer relaxing evenings with superb food and hospitality.

The wines of Alsace are amongst the finest in the world and understandably so. Villages such as Riquewihr and Turckheim produce truly great whites which are appreciated by true connoisseurs and to taste these in their home environment is a privilege indeed.

We always find it hard to choose our favourite region as each has so much to offer; Alsace would certainly be up there right at the top of the list and it always leaves people wanting to go back. The scenery is simply spectacular and a great mixture for a week of cycling, and the Germanic influence in the architecture, with chalet-style houses bedecked with flowers, makes it just a little different to the rest of France, but in a good way!
