The Cardinal's model town

The infamous Cardinal Richelieu planned a model town on his family estate that is today one of the prettiest towns in France. South of the Loire, it features in our Loire Valley Classic and our St Malo to Sete French cycling holidays. The grid pattern is surrounded by town walls and a moat, and inside the square (below) is a fine place in which to sit and sip a coffee. On our Manche to Med ride it is where you first begin to feel you are heading into the south, as the weather warms up south of the mighty Loire river.
