A unique tour to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation Chastise, better known as the Dams Raid.

If you grew up in awe of the bravery of the men of Bomber Command and 617 Squadron this is the tour for you as we make a pilgrimage ride to the site of the most famous bombing raid of WW2. Learn about the development of the bouncing bomb by Barnes Wallis, the formation of the special squadron and its characters, the training for this special mission and above all the night itself when 8 crews did not return and 40 per cent casualties were suffered.

We will ride from RAF Scampton, where the specially armed Lancaster bombers took off on the evening of 16 May 1943, to the Mohnesee where we will pay our respects at the exact time that Guy Gibson's Avro Lancaster bomber made its approach for the first attack on the Mohne Dam. Starting with a visit to the former officers' mess of 617 Squadron we will then ride to Harwich to take the ferry to the Hook of Holland for our onward journey through Holland and Germany to the banks of the Mohnesee.

  • Visit Woodhall Spa, the former Officers' Mess of 617 Squadron
  • 3 days' ride to Harwich visiting the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on the way with its Lancaster Bomber
  • Overnight sailing to The Netherlands
  • Visit Arnhem and Nijmegen on the way with historical talks about the events of Operation Market Garden
  • Visit the Reichswald Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery and pay your respects at the graves of members of 617 Squadron who were killed on the Dams Raid
  • Ride via the Dortmund Ems canal where many men of Bomber Command were killed in action throughout the war, including some who survived the Dams.
  • Arrive at the Mohnesee in time for the 80th anniversary of the raid on the night of 16 / 17 May 1943
  • Pay your respects on the walkway of the Mohne Dam at the time the raid began exactly 80 years before

Itinerary

Day 1

Tuesday 9 May. We meet at midday in Lincoln to load luggage and then ride to RAF Scampton. From here we continue to the International Bomber Command Centre for a guided tour; a very well and thoughtfully laid out memorial to the 57,000 bomber crews who peroshed in WW2. It is then an easy ride taking the riverside cycle path to the Petwood Hotel for the night, erstwhile Officers' Mess for 617 squadron and full of memorabilia. Dinner at the hotel included.

Day 2

Wednesday 10 May. From the hotel we continue to the centre of Woodhall Spa to the 617 memorial to all who died in WW2, and then on to the Battle of Britain Memoral Flight hangers where, subject to flying and operational schedules, we will visit the Lancaster bomber 'City of Lincoln', one of only 2 flying examples worldwide. This will be an interesting visit and useful for the remainder of the tour when discussing this iconic bomber. After coffee and cake we enjoy a flat route to Ely for the night. Dinner at the hotel included.

Day 3

Thursday 11 May. The only day with any elevation at all - and still not much! This is a very pretty ride to connect to our overnight ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland. Dinner not included.

Day 4

Friday 12 May. From the Hook our Rhine-side cycle path takes us to a small ferry to get onto the south bank of the river, and a few miles afterwards we are in open country with dykes and windmills. At Steenbergen we visit the grave of Guy Gibson VC, DSO and Bar, DFC and Bar, commander of 617 Squadron from its inception in March 1943 and leader of the raid. After pausing for lunch we visit the graves of the crew of S for Sugar who perished on the way to the dams and then on to lovely Breda for the night. Breakfast on ferry not included. Dinner not included.

Day 5

Saturday 13 May. Today we first visit the Dutch airfield used by German night fighters in the war and see where S for Sugar crashed as well as some other fascinating artefacts in the visitor centre and museum there, guided by our knowledgeable and enthusuastic Dutch host. The rest of the day is spent riding to Arnhem for the night, with some historical context of Market Garden supplied. Dinner included in town.

Day 6

Sunday 14 May. From Arnhem there is a lovely route as we cross into Germany and visit the site of Henry Maudslay's crash (Z for Zebra), and then continue to the Reichswald Forest cemetery to pay our repects at several of the Dambusters' crews graves including Maudslay's. Turning south we next visit the Rheinberg cemetry before a short ride to our comfortable hotel. Dinner included.

Day 7

Monday 15 May. Today we skirt north of the Rhur conurbation, with another ferry ride across the Rhine on our ay To Halterm am See for the night. On the way we pass Bill Astell's crash site and hopefully the small museum in delightful Raesfeld will be open. Halterm is a pretty town and dinner at the hotel is included.

Day 8

Tuesday 16 May. From Halterm we soon cross the Dortmund-Ems canal which was a target for 617 squadron in September 1943 and where a number of survivors of the dams raid perished in a disastrous attack. Follwoing, roughly speaking, the approach route of 80 years ao we visit Warner Ottley and John Hopgood's crash sites and then, finally, set eyes on the massive stone structure that is the Mohne Dam. There is plenty of time to examine and discuss events here before the very short ride to our hotel on the banks of the reservoir, with time to relax before dinner (included). We will then return to the dam at midnight to pay our respects exactly 80 years after the attacks were made and to remember  the brave young men who died, many of whom we have visited during the ride from RAF Scampton.

Day 9

Wednesday 17 May. Leave after breakfast by minibus for return to Lincoln. Early evening arrival in Lincoln.
