Italy Top to Toe

Italy Top to Toe

May 2025 | September 2025

New for 2025 is our Italy Top to Toe route from Verona near Lake Garda in the north to the very tip - or toe - of Italy in the south. Cycle through the famous regions and towns of  Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio, Umbria, Campania and Calabria. This truly epic and memorable bike ride averages about 70 miles a day over 17 days riding plus a rest day in the middle.

This is our longest tour and follows the same mould as our other popular end to end routes (Spain, France, LEJOG...). Whilst achievable by most cyclists with sensible pacing and gearing, Italy is generally a hilly country so you should be well prepared and sanguine that there will be an amount of climbing each day. Most hills are longer and shallower rather than short and steep and of course our support vehicles will never be far away to encourage you.

E-bikes are perfectly acceptable on this tour. You will find it easier if you have a detachable battery to charge in your room each night and some experience in using an eletric bike so as not to use all the power in the first 5 miles!

Our early May departure is timed to avoid the worst of the summer heat, and should mean reasonable temperatures.

Bikes can be taken out and back under the ATA Carnet scheme relieving you of that particular headache (included in the cost) - see the bottom of the page for more details.

Highlights include:

  • Romantic Verona with its Roman remains and Shakespeare connctions
  • The beauty of the Apennine hills and the views
  • Hilltop towns everywhere

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in wonderful Verona for the evening and explore this historic and romantic city with its Roman amphitheatre, Juliet’s balcony and historic centre. In fact, if you choose to come out a day early you certainly won’t regret it and we can easily arrange this for you. We meet early evening for our pre-ride briefing before going out to eat with your fellow riders and an opportunity to start to get to know the group (Saturday. Dinner included).

Day 2

It’s a long-ish but almost completely flat day as you cross the River Po plain passing delightful Mantua, Italy’s city of culture in 2016, on the way – perhaps an ideal choice for an early lunch. The destination is Parma and our route takes a safe way into the historic city and to our hotel right in the very centre. Dinner is a free choice tonight and there are ample opportunities to try the local ham! (Sunday. Breakfast included. 78 miles / 125 km, 356m climbing).

Day 3

The exit from the city isn’t too bad or busy and you will soon be out in open countryside again, enjoying speeding along in your biggest gear. Just before our coffee break you will get the opportunity to check that your gears still work as you climb up into the Apennines which stretch almost the whole way down Italy and which you will encounter on several occasions. There are some short but steep sections and superb views back across the plain and to the west. It’s a wonderful hotel tonight with great food and a spa / swimming pool in which to relax tired muscles. (Monday. Breakfast & dinner included. 68 miles, 110km, 2311m climbing).

Day 4

Today is spent once more in the hills for the first two thirds of the day, before a fantastic descent with really superb views and a flat last third as you enter the northern part of Tuscany. Once again it is unspoilt and most of the elevation is gained with 3 or 4 longer, shallower hills of the sort where you find a gear you are comfortable with and plug away until the top comes. As you come off the hills you will notice and feel the difference in the climate and buildings, and will start to see some pretty hilltop towns on the way to our small town for the night. (Tuesday. Breakfast & dinner included. 74 miles, 118km, 2198m climbing).

Day 5

Riding via Leonardo da Vinci’s birthplace, the Tuscan influence becomes stronger throughout the day with many small towns with historic buildings and churches. Olive trees start being more frequent and you are also in the famous Chianti vineyards towards the end of the day. The second half is a little hillier but you should still make it to Siena in plenty of time to explore this wonderful city and soak up the atmosphere in the exquisite main square. NB ask us about the exquisite gelato (ice cream) parlour just off the square which coupled with one of the finest views anywhere will make you tingle with enjoyment! (Wednesday. Breakfast included. 61 miles, 97km, 1555m climbing).

Day 6

Everyone has an image of Italy in their mind and for many, that image will be seen in reality today as we ride south from Siena through achingly beautiful countryside. Old farmhouses atop small hills with lines of cypress trees leading to them, ancient villages through which we pass and superlative views throughout the day, which ends in a town famed for its wine. (Thursday. Breakfast included. 59 miles, 95km, 2117m climbing).

Day 7

Leaving Tuscany we soon enter Umbria, a less frequented area for tourists but with a rich heritage and history dating back to Etruscan times. There are three larger climbs today making the majority of the daily elevation but also some lovely easier sections, the whole through lovely countryside to a wonderful hilltop town where we have a wonderful hotel where you are bound to be well looked after. (Friday. Breakfast & dinner included. 60 miles, 97km, 2176m climbing).

Day 8

From the start you plunge down into the valley and the first half of the day has a few ups and downs. After lunch we are on a plateau with a predominantly flat ride, although there is one good hill before the end. The hotel is in a village on a lakeside promontory and has fine views over the expanse of water to the hillsides beyond. This will be our hotel for two days. (Saturday. Breakfast & dinner included. 61 miles, 99km, 1809m climbing).

Day 9

Rest day. Lounge by the lake, pamper yourself in the hotel spa, stroll through the village or venture into Rome, about an hour away on the train (Sunday. Breakfast included).

Day 10

It’s great cycling today with most of the work in the central third as we enjoy superb scenery and quiet roads. Our hotel lies in a designated ‘most beautiful village’ on the edge of a national park and we are sure you will like it as much as we do. (Monday. Breakfast & dinner included. 56 miles, 87km, 1264m climbing).

Day 11

Another shorter day riding south to the town of Cassino which saw bitter fighting in WW2. There should be time to visit the abbey, perched high above the town. For those interested, your guide will gladly tell you all about the battle of Monte Cassino! (Tuesday. Breakfast included. 56 miles, 90km, 1292m climbing).

Day 12

A gentle start to our longest day as you follow the river valley south. Most of the day’s elevation comes as we climb through a recreational nature park in the second half of the day along quiet roads with some superb far-reaching views. It’s not massively steep but it is long so save some energy and have lunch before you start the ascent. The day ends with a fantastic long descent to our comfortable hotel and glimpses of Mount Vesuvius if the conditions permit. (Wednesday. Breakfast & dinner included. 86 miles, 137km, 2351m climbing).

Day 13

An intentionally shorter day to allow you time to explore perhaps the world’s most famous ruins at Pompei. Two climbs start the day with longer but well-graded ascents and glimpses of the Bay of Naples and the offending Mount Vesuvius. Our hotel is very nice and is a 5-minute walk from the ruins and the town centre. We also highly recommend a visit to the cathedral to see the intricate and ornate internal painting, before perhaps the best pizza you’ve ever had on the high street not many miles from where this now global dish originated. (Thursday. Breakfast included. 54 miles, 86km, 909m climbing).

Day 14

Once clear of Pompei we take the coast road around the famed Amalfi peninsular. Wonderful views of towns seemingly glued to the rock face and many photo opportunities make this a day to remember on the bike. In the summer peak period this is a busy area but out of July and August far less so, making this an enjoyable ride with breathtaking views which you will remember forever. (Friday. Breakfast & dinner included. 75 miles, 120km, 1950m climbing).

Day 15

Another lakeside location beckons tonight as we skirt a nature reserve that sadly just doesn’t have good enough roads to ride through; you may still see some interesting wildlife and almost certainly birds overhead. By now you will be noticing the changes in the countryside and built environment as we are well into the south. There are some wonderful hilltop towns we see and some dramatic views too, of completely unspoilt vistas. (Saturday. Breakfast & dinner included. 75 miles, 121km, 2245m climbing).

Day 16

A hillier day today and very rural too. More long views along valleys as you climb or descend with little or no traffic and the route is especially lovely today. Our family run hotel sits on a fringe of a nice town with views across a valley to the Duomo and town on the other side with a nice terrace on which to hydrate and enjoy the evening warmth. (Sunday. Breakfast & dinner included. 74 miles, 119km, 2713m climbing).

Day 17

Some of the places you will ride through today are like the land that time forgot with villages seemingly unchanged for generations. By now you will know that you have mastered the challenge of riding through Italy and this is always a great psychological boost but take time to enjoy the remaining few days. (Monday. Breakfast & dinner included. 70 miles, 112km, 2627m climbing).

Day 18

A day of two halves again with a harder first half and more straightforward finish after coming down off the hills for lunch in a spa town. You will see the sea on your right and we avoid the more built up coastal area, taking a turn into the very toe of Italy to our wonderful hotel in a town. It’s a free night tonight meaning you can choose where to eat but we will give pointers and there is a very good restaurant near the hotel which does a superb version of the famous local pudding of tartufo. (Tuesday. Breakfast included. 63 miles, 101km, 1922m climbing).

Day 19

The last day of your adventure and one large climb in the middle before a long descent down to Reggio Calabria and views across the straights to Sicily. Our hotel is central and we will enjoy a proper feast tonight with friends old and new to reminisce and wallow in the glory of your achievements without the need to get up and ride a bike tomorrow! (Wednesday. Breakfast and dinner included. 75 miles, 120km, 2022m climbing).

Day 20
