The Great Bike Ride: London to Paris for Kennedy's Disease UK

September 2025

Join our fantastic cycle ride from London to Paris in aid of Kennedy’s Disease, a rare inherited neuromuscular disorder characterised by the degeneration of lower motor neurons within the spinal cord and brainstem. The route will take you from the UK centre for research in Bloomsbury, London, to the French counterpart in Paris, to raise funds and heighten awareness of the condition. By entering on our website you are agreeing that we pass your details on to the charity (Kennedy's Disease UK / KD-UK) who will contact you with sponsorship details as riders will be expected to fundraise for them on this event. Cyclists will each be expected to raise £1,000 of sponsorship for KD-UK. KD-UK will support the fundraising through their website and social media.

This fully supported event will be crewed by an experienced team on hand to help with any mechanical issues and your daily needs will be catered for with refreshments stops and picnics along the way.

You’ll find French roads quieter and better maintained than British ones, and drivers more respectful towards cyclists as you complete this wonderful challenge of just over 300 miles!

Itinerary

Day 1

London to Calais, 90 miles, Thursday 11 September 2025. An early start (7am) is required to make sure you arrive in Calais in good time tonight to relax and prepare for the next stage of your adventure! Once you are clear of the city it is a largely rural route through the lovely Kent countryside and although hilly at times, our support will be close at hand should you need it. There will be a refreshment stop mid morning, a picnic lunch and another refreshment stop in the afternoon to keep you fuelled and also giving you the opportunity to meet and mix with your fellow riders. We aim for a ferry at 1800 (exact time tbc) and you should take the opportunity to eat and refuel by having your evening meal on board. On arrival in France it is a short ride of only 20 minutes or so to our hotel on the outskirts of the town. (Picnic lunch included; breakfast and dinner not included).

Day 2

Calais to Arras, 78 miles, Friday 12 September 2025. Very quickly from the departure you are in open countryside and this continues throughout the day. It is generally flat with the largest hill being some 10 miles before the end at Vimy Ridge. However from here the views back towards Belgium and over the man-made triangular terrils, a legacy of the area’s coal mining heritage. There  is also the jaw-droppingly beautiful Vimy memorial to Canadians lost in the first war. Our destination is Arras with its two beautiful squares and Flemish architecture, both within a short walk of the hotel and well worth a wander! (Breakfast, picnic lunch, supper included).

Day 3

Arras to Compiegne, 80 miles, Saturday 13 September 2025. It’s great cycling south of Arras on good roads which ride well and which take you through a gently undulating landscape down to the Somme river. You’ll pass some cemeteries from the first war as this is where the famous battle was fought in 1916; today it has reverted to a very pretty area, a long way from the horrors of yesteryear. After crossing the river the roads remain quiet and although there is one good climb it is eminently achievable and never previously caused problems! Compiegne is a medium sized town with a pretty centre and you can relax slightly tonight knowing that tomorrow night you’ll be in Paris! (Breakfast, picnic lunch, supper included).

Day 4

Compiegne to Paris, 65 miles, Sunday 14 September 2025. Our route takes you by the quietest possible routes into Paris and for stretches you will be riding alongside canals and the river Marne. That said it is a capital city so care should be exercised, as always. It’s a shorter day today and you will recognise some of the famous landmarks from some distance, adding to the sense of anticipation and achievement. The welcoming committee will be at our destination in the heart of this wonderful city and you should have time for an explore before the celebratory evening meal! (Breakfast, picnic lunch, supper included).

*All distances are approximate

Day 5

Monday 15 September 2025. Departure for return to London for riders and bikes arriving mid afternoon. (Breakfast included).
