What you can expect

The original and still the best French end to end route available! Why the best? Because it is a straight line route crossing areas of such incredible beauty that no detours are required. Diverse landscapes from flat to mountainous, the route takes in quiet roads virtually all the way. Discover la France profonde as you travel off the beaten track in this diagonal traverse of France. This trip is a true experience with sometimes long days; the emotion when you finally see the thin line of the Mediterranean in the distance is something you will remember for years to come. We cross many of France's major rivers and pedal through rural areas, some of them known internationally for their produce. A real adventure! 10 days' cycling; 7 nights half board (drinks not included); two nights bed and breakfast; luggage transport, full back-up and assistance throughout the day.

View Overview Route Map

This classic French end-to-end is often regarded as the equivalent of Land's End - John O'Groats. A challenging ride with long days in the saddle and a fair quota of hills make this a tour for regular cyclists who will appreciate roads that are much quieter and better surfaced than those back home (those interested in a more gentle tour should consider our Calais to Nice or St Malo to Nice routes over two weeks).

Transfers from (start): St Malo ferry and TGV station.

Transfers to (end): Return transfers will be offered if possible but in any case both Sete station and Montpellier airport are very easy and straightforward to get to.

Requested Single Supplement (see our FAQ page): £650

Testimonials:

'Belated massive thanks to you and Paul for the awesome St Malo to Sete trip. Really impressed with the whole thing from start to finish, but mostly by the nothing to much trouble attitude of yourself from Day 1. Heightens the customer experience immensely when your host provides such an excellent service.'

'Thanks Charlie for taking us on a fantastic trip from St Malo to Sete. It was a real cycling challenge, right up there with LEJOG. We passed through places I never dreamt of visiting on quiet roads, saw some amazing scenery and made new friends. All in all, it was an excellent 10 days of cycling!'

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet in the morning of day 1 in St Malo. Most people take the ferry from Portsmouth over the evening before. After our pre-ride briefing and safety talk, we set off along the coast eastwards, with pretty beaches and bays and the evocative Mont St Michel viewed in in the distance. It is a very straightforward ride today with not much in the way of big hills. After coffee we turn our back on the sea for the next 10 days. The first night is spent in the magnificent mediaeval town of Vitré. 75 miles, 1,222m. (Meals included: dinner)

Day 2

Vitre to Angers is pretty much flat and you will make good progress across open country. Enjoy a picnic lunch beside the Mayenne river before a lovely run-in to Angers, a nice city just north of the Loire. 70 miles, 918m. (Meals included: Breakfast, picnic lunch)

Day 3

Early on, the first major milestone can be ticked off as you cross the mighty Loire river, then enjoy a lovely ride with frequent glimpses of the river to Saumur, with its famous chateau, and on to majestic Chinon for the night. Another wonderful town and by now you will be getting into the swing of things and starting to be infused with the spirit of France and the wonderful cycling. 60 miles, 808m (Meals included: Breakfast).

Day 4

Leaving Chinon we soon cross the Cher river and from here you will notice that you are entering a far more rural landscape (not that it was built up before today, but this really is La France Profonde). This is one of our favourite days as we enter the lovely Gartempe and Creuse region, with unspoilt river valleys and picture-postcard villages with cafés in the square under shady trees. You then follow the river Creuse all the way to Le Blanc, before striking out again through a patchwork of fields and ancient forests. Arriving in Argenton on evening four you will start to notice the limestone outcrops, and ahead of you in the distance the first signs of the Massif Central. 80 miles, 1,366m. (Meals included: Breakfast, dinner)

Day 5

After a good night's rest a hilly day awaits as you ride south to the halfway hotel in   unspoilt Peyrat or Aubusson, both of which lie on the northern edge of the Massif Central. Once again the roads are unbelievably quiet and the views spectacular. A day in which to pace yourself and keep hydrated especially if it is hot. 83 miles, 2,313m. (Meals included: Breakfast, dinner)

Day 6

From here, you can get into a nice rhythm and soon you will be into the uplands of the Cantal, where little has changed for centuries, except it would seem the road surfaces which are mostly billiard table smooth on the road to Riom-es-Montagnes. You may have guessed from the name that this is now hill country, right on the edge of the Auvergne national park. 83 miles, 2,514m. (Meals included: Breakfast, dinner)

Day 7

Today has the big hill - the Puy Mary (or Pas de Peyrol) rising to 1688m and a long climb. There's an excellent mountain restaurant at the top and the views are quite spectacular. Look back after the twelve mile descent and you can see the top far in the distance. Next is the Col d'Entremont - nothing too hard - and the descent into Murat, a climb out again and an evening stop in historic St. Flour which owes its prosperity to its location on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. 49 miles, 1,478m. (Meals included:  Breakfast, dinner)

Day 8

The next day starts with a lovely ride to the Chateau d'Alleuze with early morning mist rising off the lake it sits next to, then on to Fournels and a super road alongside a babbling brook and up onto the Cheylac plateau. Crossing the motorway, looking down at the frustrated motorists, there’s a fast and seemingly never-ending descent (it really does go on and on!) down into Marvejols and on for another dozen miles to where we spend the night. 54 mil;es, 1,509m. (Meals included: Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner)

Day 9

The ride today is a harder one, but the scenery makes up for the effort as you get into the country of the Tarn Gorges, where there are longer climbs interspersed with long flatter sections. The scenery here is as dramatic as it is unforgettable and you will see vultures circling in the skies. We continue on to Lodeve for the night and you now know that your journey is achievable, and a tinge of sadness that tomorrow is the last day. 88 miles, 2.071m. (Meals included: Breakfast, dinner)

Day 10

The route to the Mediterranean has a few climbs but nothing tortuous, with several ridges to cross along the way. Finally you look up and see the Mediterranean in the distance. A very  emotional moment!  A great descent into wine country once more, and then across the coastal strip to the lighthouse in Sète.  Enjoy a celebratory dinner (not included but a group reservation will be made) on the harbour side near our centrally located hotel and reminisce with new friends about your fantastic achievement! 50 miles, 962m. (Meals included: Breakfast)
